In Roman times, there were beliefs and empirical knowledge concerning the quality of water. However, the quality of aqueduct water from ancient cities has never been properly assessed, leaving open questions regarding the biotic and abiotic composition of the water channels. The project will be based on the study of fossilised biofilms from the aqueduct of the ancient city of Sufetula (Sbeitla, Tunisia) from the 1st to the 6th century AD, in order to characterise the water quality and detect possible pathogen contamination.
