7. Libraries/Databases

Specialized books in Archaeology were already acquired in Kiel in the middle of the 19th century. Since the founding of an independent department in 1895, the holdings have been continually and systematically expanded. Today, the library of the Classical Archaeology department comprises around 25,000 volumes. These are supplemented by the holdings in Archaeology (arc section) of the University Central Library and the holdings of related departments (Ancient History, Greek and Latin Philology and many others). Kiel thus has one of best university libraries for classical archaeology in Germany. Books searches are done using the OPAC. You will find the current opening hours of the departmental library on our homepage.

In preparing for courses or presentations, students also have the extensive image database ArkuBiD available to them.
