International Colloquium
"The Dynamics of Neighbourhoods and Urban Quarters"
(Excellence Cluster ROOTS)
 November 11–12, 2021, CAU Kiel

street

This colloquium will focus on neighbourhoods and urban quarters with a focus on Roman Imperial Cities. With regard to neighbourhoods and quarters, it will be possible to analyse such processes starting from forms of spatial order.

There are different definitions of the term ‘neighbourhoods’ in research and the various disciplines. Most often, neighbourhoods are considered as spatial entities on a smaller scale beeing based on face-to-face interaction (Smith 2010). In German language, the definition of neighbourhood oscillates between the concept of the Quartier (spatial-social structure whose spatial extension depends on social and cultural parameters) and that of the Nachbarschaft (social phenomenon with a small-scale face-to-face extension, for example in a housing community). The terms thus describe two different (but not strictly separated) scales of social and spatial connectivity.

This colloquium will approach neighbourhoods and city quarters from different perspectives:

Section 1: City Quarters

Section 2: Neighbourhoods: Shared Infrastructures and Resources

Section 3: Neighbourhoods and Shared Aesthetics

Programm

The Coloquium ist designed as a hybrid event and will take place both digitally and analogue at the Antikensammlung Kiel: Düsternbrooker Weg 1
