Hellenistic historians on landscape perception

Lagerhof der Villa di Villa Regina, BoscorealeSet within the framework of the E3 Project « Hellenistic sanctuary as a perception and action context: mutual influence between humans, architecture, and landscape » this sub-project serves to cover the literary sources dealing with landscape perception, and sanctuaries in particular. Reading Hellenistic historians I will search for evidence of interaction and interrelation between human beings and nature/landscape through for example military actions, architecture, urbanscape perception, and in particular sanctuaries. The Hellenistic historian Polybius (c. 200-after 118 BCE) will be the first calling point in my quest to search for literary evidence that supports the hypothesis of the SFB-E3 Teilprojekt. There are several instances where Polybius perceives the situation of sanctuaries within cities and the surrounding landscape, for example in Plb. 9.27 on Agrigentum where a temple of Athene and Zeus Atabyrius sit atop the citadel (see image below), similar to Rhodes. After a close-text analysis of Polybius’ work, the analysis will have to be expanded chronologically in both ways by looking at earlier and later historians, as well as pilgrims’ travel accounts.
