Utilising a range of art-historical and archaeological techniques, WP-5 seeks to analyse the design of Roman streets from an aesthetic perspective. Rather than focusing on particular structural aspects of the ancient streetscape, such as the positioning of fountains or locations of crossroads shrines, this research explores the roadbed, sidewalks, and flanking buildings in their totality, linking decorative and iconographic themes identified on streetside facades with the actions and activities of the street.
